چکیده

Numerical simulation of advective-dispersive contaminant transport is carried out by using high-order compact finite difference schemes combined with second-order MacCormack and fourth-order Runge-Kutta schemes. Both of the two schemes have accuracy of sixth-order in space. A sixth-order MacCormack scheme is proposed for the first time within this study. For the aim of demonstrating efficiency and high-order accuracy of the current methods, some numerical experiments have been done. The schemes are implemented to solve two test problems with known exact solutions. It has been exhibited that themethods are capable of succeeding high accuracy and efficiency with minimal computational effort, by comparisons of the computed results with exact solutions.

High Order Compact Finite Difference Schemes for Solving Bratu-Type Equations

In the present study, high order compact finite difference methods is used to solve one-dimensional Bratu-type equations numerically. The convergence analysis of the methods is discussed and it is shown that the theoretical order of the method is consistent with its numerical rate of convergence. The maximum absolute errors in the solution at grid points are calculated and it is shown that the ...

An Error Estimate for Mmoc-mfem Based on Convolution for Porous Media Flow

Mathematical models used to describe porous medium flow processes in petroleum reservoir simulation, groundwater contaminant transport, and other applications lead to a coupled system of time-dependent nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) [1]. Conventional second-order finite difference or finite element methods (FDMs, FEMs) tend to yield solutions with spurious oscillations. In indu...

Finite difference TVD scheme for modeling two-dimensional advection-dispersion

This paper describes the development of the stream-tube based dispersion model for modeling contaminant transport in open channels. The operator-splitting technique is employed to separate the 2D contaminant transport equation into the pure advection and pure dispersion equations. Then the total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes are combined with the second-order Lax-Wendroff and third–order ...

High order time discretization for backward semi-Lagrangian methods

We introduce different high order time discretization schemes for backward semi-Lagrangian methods. These schemes are based on multi-step schemes like AdamsMoulton and Adams-Bashforth schemes combined with backward finite difference schemes. We apply these methods to transport equations for plasma physics applications and for the numerical simulation of instabilities in fluid mechanics. In the ...

A Hybrid Numerical Model for Simulating Atmospheric Dispersion

A hybrid numerical model for simulating atmospheric contaminant dispersion is developed. The hybrid numerical scheme employs an hp-adaptive finite element method coupled with a Lagrangian particle transport technique to solve the governing equations for atmospheric flow and species transport. A random walk/stochastic approach is used to generate Lagrangian particles that define the contaminant ...
